A European district in Brussels

Europe in Brussels

This tour shows participants the main buildings occupied by the European institutions in Brussels: the European Commission, the European Council, the European Parliament and the Economic & Social Committee. The tour explains what these institutions do, and, above all, the issues raised by their presence in the Brussels cityscape, based on the monofunctional policy of “all offices –

all cars” which was in force in the 1960s and in subsequent urban development plans. The alternative vision, put forward by local residents’ associations, (re-introducing an urban mix of housing, offices, shops and facilities, giving priority to public transport users, pedestrians and cyclists and increasing the mixture of the social classes) seems to have the upper hand today.
